Out of This World

The Fourth grade students are learning about the planets right now in Science. This week we are putting together a book. Each page gives facts and information about a specific planet. The students researched a planet with a partner and then shared their information with the class. I am excited to see how they turn out!

Mixing Things Up

Beginning next Wednesday, your child may be going to a different teacher/classroom for Reading and Language.  We have changed our groups.  No matter what teacher your child may have, all 4th graders will be doing the same curriculum.  A note will be going home with your child stating who he/she has for Reading/Language.

Book Projects

The Big Idea for Unit 2 in reading is: "What can animals teach us?"  Each student in my reading group had to pick out a chapter book that had an animal as either the main character or an animal played an important role in the story.  We are now choosing which projects we will complete.  Each child must pick two of the nine projects and will then give a presentation on their book.  The presentations will be in two weeks.  Below is their Choice Board.  Ask your child what projects they are going to do and I bet they would love some of your help to complete them.  Thank you!

Your assignment is to pick two projects from the selection below. You will be graded on your projects and your oral presentation.
1. Create a diorama​-use a box and create the setting of your story
2.Make a poster​-pretend your book is going to be made into a movie
3.Create a book jacket​-different than the one on your book
4.Write the author a letter​-State why you did or did not like the book
5.Put together a Google Slides presentation
6.Write a letter​ to a friend informing them why they should read the book
7.Make a memory game​- use index cards with the vocabulary words and definitions 4
8.D Trioramas​- What were your favorite parts of the book, who were the characters, etc.
9.Book report flaps​- recall the events in the order that they happened


This is the list for the week of October 31st. The test will be on Friday, November 4th.

Writer's Block ...No Way!

I love lists! It is even more fun when the lists are colorful. This year my students will be doing some creative writing using different lists. This is the first of several for the year. It is a great way to allow students to continue writing if they finish early during writing period.

News Show

Hello!  My students have taken the bull by the horns this year and decided to be the first class to put together a CIS News Show.   We work hard during the week to create scripts and then record the show.  Then every Monday morning, all of the  students in the school begin the week by watching that week's news show.  Check out the first three that we created.  We just got done recording next week's show and then will have one more week before passing the baton:)

Hydro the Snake

Jennifer wanted to share her pet snake, Hydro with the class. It took a lot of convincing, but I finally gave in;) Some of the students were brave enough to hold him, but not me!

A Fossil Find

We love to have visitors in the classroom. Yesterday we enjoyed listening to Hannah and her dad tell us about their weekend adventure. They went fossil hunting north of Ardmore, SD, and wanted to share their finds with the class. They took the time to create a slide presentation and then passes around fossils of clams, ammonites, and baculites.

Learning about Biomes

The fourth grade students have been researching biomes in Science. Today we get to enjoy the slide shows. The students are also taking notes about the biotic and abiotic components. They will then each create a foldable about all of the biomes.

Who has students who finish early? Who doesn't?!?! My students like to free-write to fill their time. I like to have them create lists. I love watching the creative juices flow!

Curriculum Project

Well, my class is coming to an end.  Our final assignment was to create a curriculum video that we could use in our classroom.  I chose to make a video for math class.  I am anxious to share it with my students.  With my daughter's assistance and the help of Mr. Horst, we got it done.  I have learned a lot through this course.

Course Reflection

The past four weeks have flown by! It seems like I was just beginning this journey in Multimedia Authoring and wondering how I was going to tackle all of the projects and now I am working on my final assignment.

 a. I learned a lot throughout this course. I have learned that I need to step out of my comfort zone if I want to grow as an educator. I was able to model digital age work and learning and know that my students were amazed at how much I learned and was willing to share with them. I would now like to implement more of what I learned into my instruction and have my students create some multimedia projects using some of the same tools that I used in this course such as Animoto.

 b. I had my doubts as to how my teaching could be enhanced through the use of Twitter. I now see that I have built myself a network of educators across the country who are willing to help me in any way that they can. I am no longer "limited" to my colleagues in my building. I think our colleagues are our number one resource and I now have a variety of educators to turn to when I need help. I also enjoyed using the Screencastify Extension. I can see how this would be a very powerful tool for students who need something explained more than once. They now will be able to have me repeat something over and over again without me actually being there. I think parents will appreciate that, too. Students can no longer tell their parents, "That is now how Mrs. Anderson taught it." Parents can have their child pull up the lesson and watch it over and over again until they "get it."

 c. I had already used some multimedia tools in my classroom, but I plan to build and expand on what I had been using. I like the idea of having playlists created in YouTube. I wish I had known about them sooner! Now if I find a video worth watching again, I can add it to a playlist. Another goal I have set for myself is to work on Professional Development. I plan on doing this through listening to Podcasts that I have found on iTunes. I have also subscribed to some YouTube channels that will help me work on this goal. There are so many great TED talks to watch and listen to.

Screencastify Extension

I had a lot of fun using the Screencastify Extension in Google Chrome. It was easy to use and it will be an amazing tool to use in the classroom. When students cannot remember what the teacher told them, they can just go to a Screencast and watch it as many times as they need to in order to complete an assignment.

Free Technology for Teachers

Who doesn't like to hear the word, "free?"  I know educators love it when we can find great tools to use in our classroom that are free!  Richard Byrne's blog at http://www.freetech4teachers.com is a great blog to check out if you are looking for new ways to integrate technology into your classroom.

One resource that I would like to have my students try out is Storehouse.  It is a free app for the iPad or iPhone.  It would allow students to create a story with pictures.  I think it would be fun to have the students use Storehouse after our end-of-the-year field trip.  I think they would have fun taking the photos and creating a digital story that they could share with friends and family.

There are so many great iPad apps out there, but having the time to research and find the good ones can be very time consuming.  One science app that Richard Byrne's suggests is Classify It!  In the app, elementary and middle school students can learn how to classify a given plant or animal.  There are different levels of the game which makes it more challenging.  This app would make a great learning center for Science and a teacher could have students work individually or with a partner.

Like I stated earlier, there are so many great resources out there.  When you find a great one, make sure to share it with your colleagues!  We can all help each other become a little better!

A New Way to Use Videos

How many times have you used a video created by someone else, but wanted to make it a little better? Have you ever wanted to pause the video and clarify something that was mentioned or add another picture to help your students understand? Well, I have just the multimedia tool for you! It is time to give Zaption a try. Zaption allows you to take any video (one from the web or your own) and add to it. You get to decide where you want the video to pause and then can add an image, text box, a drawing, and even short answers or questions! I found it to be user-friendly, but you do need to sign up for a free account before you can give it a try. This would work for all ages and subjects. It allows you to spice up your lessons through the use of videos. You could have your students find a video on a certain subject/topic, but make it their own by using Zaption.


There are so many great resources available to teachers.  I just got done creating my first Animoto video for one of my college courses.  I think this would be a fun way for students to share what they learned, whether it be for a book share or a research report.  Students could have a lot of fun with Animoto.  I also found it to be very user-friendly.

Time for Technology

There are times that I feel I could not live life without technology and then there are those times that I wish I did not have to deal with any technology.  

I am currently working on a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction through Peru State College.  Peru State was a perfect fit since all of the courses are on-line and it is a fast-paced track to getting my Master's Degree.  I am not sure what I will do with my degree once I receive it, but I know that it has already impacted my teaching in my classroom.  I have learned so much from the courses that I have completed.  It has really made me reflect on my teaching and honestly that is something that I did not do often enough.  

I have to be both a Mac and PC person.  I have a Mac in my classroom and a PC at home.  It is sometimes interesting getting my brain to convert between the two!  I use MS Office on-line at home.  Our schools just went to Google Chrome completely this year, so I had to figure out how I was going to get all of my class work completed and I decided that MS Office on-line would work best for me since I tend to stay late and work on assignments after school in order to have some peace and quiet.
