It is another year of prepping our fourth grade students for the Statewide Writing Assessment that will be in February. I think writing is fun, but the students do not always agree with me. We started the year off right by using M&M's and 7-UP. We talked about consequences and how there are good and bad consequences. The children each got to grab a handful of M&M's, but were not told what the consequence would be if they took a lot (one handful) or only a few (minimum of 5). Then we talked about 7-UP sentences. This is a sentence that has at least seven words or more. Then each child got a can of pop. Finally, the students were told what they had to do with the M&M's. For each chocolate candy, they had to write a 7-UP sentence about themselves! It was a fun way to learn about each child and they got to enjoy a special treat while doing it. I may have given in with a child or two since they chose more than 20 M&M's;)

Today went so fast that we didn't even have/take the time to take a picture of the group! I need to make sure that we get that done before the end of the week. We had a fun time getting to know each other. I have 16 students in my room this year. That is quite a difference from the 24 that I started the year with last year! We unpacked supplies, learned about the procedures used in 4th grade and did a few activities. We even enjoyed a yummy snack (see sample picture below) while Mrs. Anderson started the first read aloud of the school year, Little House on the Prairie.
